Summer as a nursing student

I don't think makakagala ako masyado this summer. Not that I'm a fan of going out but the reason is because almost the whole summer is to be occupied by schoolwork and duty.

Our group has 4 duties and 1 intensive immersion. So, total of 5 duties (6 weeks because the immersion is 10 days). We had our pastoral care lecture and our chn workshop in the two weeks before duty started.

The pastoral care thing is about spiritual care. I guess it is important and necessary when we care for patients so that they'll be holistically healthy, but do the requirements have to be so gruelling? (It's really not, the difficult part is choosing patients to do pastoral care on and approaching them for it) Our duty next week is PGH OR. Good luck in finding pastoral care patients. They'll be groggy or in pain when we get to them. Haaay.

So, going back. We have 4 duties. I'm assigned to have my clinical experience in PCMC 1B (Surgery Ward), PGH OR, CSMC/MDH ICU, and EAMC 5 North. My intensive immersion is in Nueva Ecija. Hurray. (Note the sarcasm)

According to those people who've already been there, it's stifling hot, the water's scarce, the room is small, there's no refrigerator. Big problems for me. haha. especially the heat and the water thing. But I hope, it'll be alright.

I'm through in my rotation at PCMC. I liked it there. Even if the kids' IV lines drove me mad. Ang kukulit nila. Gusto ko sila itali. Hahaha. I really liked our CI there, Ms. Varona. Naalala ko nung first day, pinag-uusapan namin na strict daw siya and nung nakita ko na siya sa mind ko.. "Uh-oh, scary." pero hindi pala. Super okay. She's nice and doesn't hassle the students. I learned a lot from that area. I learned how to perform HGT in a 1-month old baby, TPN, anal transposition, imperforated anus, necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC), etc. There were many schools who had their duty there. We shared our ward with one school but we were assigned to the surgery ward while they were assigned to the subspecialty ward (nephro, onco, etc). When there were treatments done in their treatment room, the head nurse Sir Dennis who was also a Paulinian calls us so we get to observe. We saw intrathecal chemotherapy and bone marrow aspiration performed. I felt after some time that we were stealing the other school's treatment room. They were assigned there and we had a better view. Nakakahiya. Pero ok lang. Ako lang ata nakafeel nun. Whatever.

What I also liked about our CI is that she shows us our evaluation. Isang CI lang ata in the past gumawa nun sakin. I think it's necessary because we learn from that, right? Yung sabi niya sakin Be assertive which peculiarly is also what Ms. Guiuan told me before (back in 2nd year when she showed me my evaluation for Vigil House). Compassion for patients, makes sure things are done correctly, etc. :D Very inspiring, kaya sana yung ibang CI ganun na rin no?

My other plans this summer is to reread the Harry Potter books. I started with the 7th since I don't rememeber if I reread it already. Then I'll do it chronoligically.
HP 1 /
HP 2 /
HP 3 -Mom's reading it so I'll wait till next week. I have to study anyways.
HP 4
HP 5
HP 6
HP 7 /

Since I've been reading this. I realized that Dumbledore is really brilliant. Makikita mo na sa first 2 books e. J.K. Rowling's such a great author. Natatago niya yung little important details that would show in the next books. Ingenious, really. Yung mga twists. Kaya excited na ko for book 3. :D I wish I had this passion for nursing and the books for that haha.

Namely, Wicked and Anne Frank. Sana no...

But I have to set my priorities and study so that'll take a back seat for now

Incoming Seniors

Wow. Ang bilis ng oras. As in.

But I changed my goals. Hindi lang pasa gusto ko. Sana talaga... Gusto ko grumaduate ng may academic award. Hay. Sana talaga.

Nakuha ko na yung class card for the last semester (3rd yr 2nd sem). Di na siya minail. (How stupid was that idea anyway?!) Isa siguro ako sa unang nakakuha if not the first one. I asked kung pwede yung sa friends and obviously, bawal.

It's slightly disappointing. But I expected it. At least... Pero after a while medyo nabother na ko when Jill and I were discussing it. Paano nga kaya nacompute yung RLE and skills audit no?

I hate that they don't explain it. Kaya Jill and I miss Ms. Tuazon kasi siya yung talagang marunong magexplain. Thorough and clear. Nag-ask sila Jill and Jaime A. kay Ms. Alfaro about sa Skills Audit. Di sure si Ms. Alfaro kasi matagal na or something. Yung sabi niya, yung Audit and something sa RLE.

Tapos 89 pa yun.. so saan nanggaling yung 88 diba.. Pag ganun dapat may grade lower than that e... So we think it might be because of the case presentations - regular and grand. Kasi yun yung di namin alam kung anong grade.

Sana pwedeng maexplain... Maraming naguguluhan e.

On another note, malapit na kami magimmersion.

Pero still I miss you group 15!
Ang weird and boring nung dating. walang buhay. hehe. Miss you two!

Apple and Steffi: Di na kayo naghiwalay grabe! Balik dun sa original group natin... Pero half nalang kayo dahil as usual kami ni krissa ay nalipat at sadly si pagsi, divine and obi ay nagkaproblema. (I miss that group too by the way)

Yung kwentuhan (chismisan), tawanan, messages foe each other, etc.

Sana magkasama-sama tayo ulit!!! Haha, cheesy.

Summer Duty

I'm really happy with my rotations this summer. Even if I was transferred to a different group (which doesn't seem to be my group really since I'm like a nomad), at least I got really good rotations. My first duty was at East Avenue Medical Center 5 South East Ward (It's sort of a neuro ward). I was still groupmates with Apple and Kate so it was fine. My other groupmates were Melay, Meme, Elaine, Arianne T., Leslie U., Cosio, Pasky, and Casey. I learned a lot. Gavage (NGT Feeding, specifically), Lavage (I know the difference now!), Neurovital signs, Antiulcer Meds, etc. Very productive duty...

Next was OLPH. I already had my duty last January so I wasn't that excited about it. I learned a lot! We were able to inject IV meds and I did a lot regarding IV therapy. (Yung pagpalit and dicontinuing), CBG, Laryngoscope thingy, etc. I didn't enjoy this grouping as much as the others especially when Sarah, Joellie, and Celine weren't with us yet. Other groupmates were: (basta yung mga China basically with exceptions) Cosio, Casey, Jamine, Jackie, Charisse, Joyce, Dethdeth, Jamaica, Camille, and Dhisney.

Third was my DR duty at JPR. Again, I was anxious about this duty because new groupmates and stay-in kami dito! My groupmates were Chenee, Maricar, Joanna, Macki, Lara Jill (my roommates), Poochay, Jaja, Roan, Sol, Whitney, and Dwinkle. I had 2 assist cases from this duty. Yehey. They were really friendly. I liked their group a LOT.

Next was my OR Duty. I was VERY anxious about this obviously. Sa EAMC ulit so medyo ok lang. New group... I now joined the group I'm listed in. (Bel, Aby, Leslie, Zerah, Jomariz, Elaine, Meme, Arianne, Leslie U.) Obviously, I learned a whole LOT. Our CI was nice to me and I was touched by what she commented about me during my evaluation and at my last scrub. I have 4 Major Cases now and 1 minor case! yehey!

I'm gonna edit this to put my last duty.. MDH 5A. I'll also add to the other rotations. I have to study right now!

Update

It's been a long time since I updated my blog with something... sensible. I haven't written much about what's going on with and around me.

Where should I start?

1. Nursing Research

Toxicity is most definitely NOT my passion. Our group's research was about Negative stressors. I actually don't remember too much about our research. It's been a long time. What made it difficult was the changing formats so we had to recheck and reformat the paper. I think we managed to get a good grade in the Defense although we weren't able (and now I don't think we'll ever know) to get our grade.

2. Philippine Literature Play

Can I still remember the title? Forever ata. Basta yung author si Ma. Wilfrido Guerrero. I didn't attend ALL the meetings because finance naman kami e, tapos naging documentation narin. Kami ni Giita and Jordy gumawa with help from Julia (some designing), Nazha (lettering), Trisha (yarn). Kung may nalimutan ako, sorry!

3. Regrouping (sort of)

Prior to the summer classes, the nursing office (not literal!) posted our schedules and our groups. In the first list posted, I was still in group 8, my original group and Jill was transferred to the China Group (Group 7). It was all brought about by not passing the reply slip early! [Nag-apply kasi kami ni Jill dun sa China Duty thing, and natanggap kami kaso masyadong mahal and baka wala lang kaming gagawin dun na mas may sense na magstay dito.. so we backed out] We passed our reply slips, and after some time, we learned that we were transferred to different groups. I already belong to group 6.

4. OR Lecture

We had our OR lecture with our professors, Sir Maniebo, Ms. Alfaro, and Sir Tancinco. I'm so nervous about my OR Duty (which would be on May 21-25). Marami kami sa class e. As in. Siguro 60-75 people. The lecture was informative but I feel that we would've learned more if it wasn't too condensed (three days lang!). We had a practical test on the instruments (Di ko na ata maalala, shucks!), and a post test about perioperative nursing. I had an OK score, which is surprising. We also had a return demonstration on gowning, closed and open gloving and surgical handwashing. I got a perfect score as did most o my groupmates. (Our CI wasn't paying too much attention, not that I'm complaining). I got to practice with Mom's blade handle though. Nagawa ko naman. Thankfully.

5. Class cards, Assessment, etc.

Hindi na classcards yung binigay. Parang sheet of paper nalang with the grades. Para sakin mahirap basahin, but maybe it's just me. DL parin ako.. just barely though. 93.2 ata. Kailangan mataas yung grades ko for summer. Sa Assessment naman, section A ako.. for Consti. Classmates kami ni Jill. Whoopee. Hay.

6. Philippine Constitution

Our only general education subject this summer will be taken in 9 days. Wow. 6 hours a day, 11 - 5. It was educational and it enlightened me on the politics in our country.

7. Duty

Paiba-iba ako ng duty group ngayon. I miss GROUP 8! Kakatapos lang ng second rotation ko, and I've learned SOOO much already. Ang saya! Hanggang dito nalang muna. I'll be gone for a while since my next duty is in JPR. We'll sleep in the Dorm there. Bagong group ulit. Kinalabahan ako next week, dahil OR na. Please pray for me!!!
